Forged Irons vs. Cast Irons....Which are better for you?

The selection of the right set of irons can help you “shave strokes from your score” and improve your golf game … often dramatically. Yes … it really does matter which clubs you use, especially when it comes to irons.
Skilled and experienced golfers may fill their bags with as many as seven, eight or even nine irons, a group that begins with a 1-iron for distance shots from the fairway and ends with a 9-iron for precision chip shots when a few yards off the green.
Golfers with less experience and skills that still require some “honing” often opt to have fewer irons in their bags … preferring to use only the basic set that may include a 3-iron … a 5-iron … a 7-iron … and a 9-iron.
Whether you’re a golfer that packs his bag with a full set of nine irons or someone who is content to get by with just four irons, the fact remains that the kind of irons you use impacts your game as much as the number of irons you carry in your bag.
If your skill level is somewhat advanced, you are probably better served if you use “cast” irons … that is, irons that have been crafted from a mold using several pieces of metal that are “constructed” to craft a finished iron.
Fairway irons that are constructed from “casting” metal parts can generally be found in the bags of capable players who may even be “scratch” golfers. Such skilled players have little trouble coping with the relatively small club heads and “sweet spots” on the club heads that might make satisfactory play much more difficult for a less experienced golfer.
As such, “cast” irons are a good purchase option for advanced players or even for golfers with enough experience to use these clubs successfully. Importantly, a capable amateur golfer who opts to fill his bag with a set of irons that have been cast from molds can often get the clubs custom-made … developed to fit his or her specific wants and needs.
But, what if you’re a less experienced and less capable golfer? What if your skill level is such that you’re still a duffer? If that describes you, your best bet is to purchase a set of “forged” steel or graphite irons. There are a number of reasons why “forged” steel or graphite irons may be your best bet. To begin:
Forged irons are crafted from a single piece of steel or graphite. In each case, the irons are sturdy and surprisingly lightweight, a fact that makes them easier to use. Add to that the additional fact that “forged” irons generally include larger club heads and correspondingly larger “sweet spots,” as well … and you can understand why they may be better for you that “cast” irons.
So, if you’re thinking of adding a new set of irons to your bag, follow the advice set forth here. If you’re experienced and your skill level is high, consider purchasing a set of “cast” irons. If you’re a novice who is still learning the game, choose “forged” irons. They will help you improve your score … quickly.

}

The answer to that question is “yes,” “maybe,” or “no.” Let me try to explain that to you. As you’ll soon see, the answer makes perfect sense. Here’s why …

If you’ve been “hitting the links” for many years, if you’re an avid golfer who is experienced enough to score well over eighteen holes, a golfer who plays every week throughout the year, someone who may even score in the 70s or low 80s, you probably don’t need “forged” irons.

In truth, you can fill your bag with the more traditional “cast” irons that are crafted from several pieces of metal, require a mold and are “built” so that all of the pieces fit together and form a finished product. Irons that have been “cast” from a mold are generally constructed for skilled golfers like you and feature relatively small club heads … often weigh more than other irons … and can be difficult to use for less experienced players.

But, you’re not lacking in experience. That’s why you can effectively use a “cast” set of irons. You can even have them “custom-made to fit your very specific needs.

So, if you’re an experienced golfer, someone who “bleeds” golf, a person who finds his or her way to the practice tee when there is snow on the ground, forged irons are probably not a good or necessary purchase option for you. For you, the answer considering a purchase of forged irons is “no” or, at the very least, “maybe.”

It can be “maybe” because even if you have advanced golfing skills you may want to use forged irons for their larger club heads, their single-piece construction and for the fact that they are so lightweight. Forged irons are crafted in steel or graphite and can really improve your accuracy and your length. And, they are competitively-priced, no more expensive that “cast” irons.

But what if you are not yet a “scratch” golfer … what if you are still a novice or an inexperienced player trying to improve to the point where you “break 100” for eighteen holes? The correct answer to the question in the headline -- are forged irons a good purchase option or me -- is almost certainly “yes.” Here’s why:

Forged irons and novice golfers go together like “coffee and cream” for lots of reasons. For one, forged irons are crafted from a single piece of steel or graphite. That tends to make them lighter in weight, easier to handle and more durable (important for the developing golfer who has trouble striking the ball cleanly). Moreover, “forged” irons feature larger club heads and “sweet spots” so that it is easier for you to hit the ball firmly and drive it straight without “hooking” it into the woods.

Of course, forged steel or graphite irons are available in a variety of price ranges so there is certain to be a set of these irons that fits your budget.

If you’ve been considering the purchase of a new set of irons, and if you’re still at a point where you’re developing your game, consider forger steel or graphite irons. They can help you to have more fun – and success – on the golf course.

Golf is an international game that is played by millions of people around the world – both men and women. Often referred to as a “country club sport,” it was, in its earliest days, too expensive for people of ordinary means. But that, of course, has changed …

Today golf is played on private courses and on public courses literally everywhere around the globe. And, while it was once considered too costly for many people, that is no longer the case … although greens fees … clubs … and other golf equipment can still be expensive.

Consider the irons that fill a golfer’s bag. Most golfers, experienced or novice, include a set of irons that run from 1-9, sometimes less.

In the past, virtually all irons were “cast” … made from a mold of different sections that were assembled in a factory and “put together” to form a finished product. Most capable golfers, those who have played for years, have little difficulty using “cast” irons even though such irons often have small “sweet spots” and, as a result, make it difficult to strike the ball solidly.

And that’s why manufacturers of golf clubs – specifically irons – have come up with a “different kind of iron,” one that helps less experienced and/or skilled players enjoy more success on the course. These new kinds of irons are “forged,” shaped out of solid, single pieces of metal … no casting necessary.

Forged irons have brought new excitement to the game of golf for players with limited golfing skills. They feature even weight distribution … are often lightweight because they’re constructed in steel or graphite … have larger club heads and “sweet spots” … and, generally speaking, make the game easier for novice players.

As is true for “cast” irons, the cost of “forged” iron clubs can be a bit steep. So, if your budget is a concern, you may wish to purchase a set of “used” or previously-owned “forged” irons to put in your bag. You can find used irons at any pro shop or in sporting goods stores at your local mall or a downtown “brick-and-mortar” walk-in shop.

When looking to purchase “forged” irons, seek help from the pro golfer at the pro shop or the salesman at the store you visit. The clubs you purchase have to “fee;” right … have the right length for you … and you need to be comfortable holding them … each iron, of course.

But, there can be no doubt that forged irons are right for you if you are still at a stage where you’re trying to improve your skills … and your score for every 18 holes you play.

Look … forged irons are the latest innovation in the world’s greatest game – golf. They have been developed with the specific purpose of aiding “duffers” get around the course more quickly … and with more success. And that is something these irons do … regularly.

So … what are forged irons? Consider them your “ticket” to greater success “on the links.”

Which Type of Golfing Iron is Right for you?

There has been a long-running controversy in the world of golf concerning two types of irons that are on the market and available to the golfing public. The question golfers often ask themselves is this: should I buy “blades” or should I opt for “cavity back” irons?

It’s a good question for which there is a very good answer. It is as follows …

If you are a good golfer, an experienced player who plays frequently and has been playing for years … someone who regularly finishes 18 holes with a score in the 70s or even in the low 80s, you are probably much better served if you fill your bag with “blades.”

Why … “blades” feature smaller club heads and are the types of irons generally used by skilled golfers … irons that give you a “feel” for the contact you create … and a “feel” for any mistakes that may occur in your swing.

Think about it. With “blades,” your fairway game and your approach game, from off the green, are likely to be good or, if you have a fault in your swing, it is likely to be noticeable … and correctable. That’s what you get when you opt to use “blades.”

But what if you’re a much less advanced golfer; someone who has trouble hitting the ball squarely on a consistent basis, a golfer who is still learning how to play … and still working hard on improving “your game?” For you, the best choice is “cavity blades.”

That’s because “cavity blades” were developed to help novice golfers just like you. They feature a much larger “sweet spot” on their club heads which enables you to hit the ball more squarely and solidly on a consistent basis.

Additionally, because these irons have larger “sweet spots” and bigger club heads, you have a much better chance of driving the ball in a straight or, at least, a straighter line … and that means you have a much better chance of seeing improvement in your golf game.

In fact, “cavity back” irons are also known as “improvement irons” because they allow you to make adjustments “on the fly” and correct obvious errors you may have in your swing. But, there is a negative.

When you opt to use “cavity back” irons, you will sacrifice “feel,” the kind of “feel” that users of “blades” enjoy. That means you will have less chance of recognizing and correcting flaws in your swing and, over time, you may actually see your progress as a golfer slow down. However, that is the only negative.

And at this point in your personal golfing odyssey, you are better off using “cavity blades” because they are easier for you to use … will help you overcome your faults (such as an incorrect swing) … and will enable you to enjoy your time out on the course.

And isn’t that why you play … to have a good time? So, if you’re not yet a scratch golfer, if you’re still learning the game – fill your bag with “cavity back” irons. If, however, you’re already experienced and skilled – your best choice is “blades.”

Can they really improve your Golf Game?

Golf is one of the world’s oldest games, a sport that has almost universal appeal … and, for most players, a truly frustrating endeavor.

Unlike most other sports and/or games, golf pits you, the player, against the course where it is being played. And, as you well know, the game is simplicity personified.

You play golf outdoors, over 18 holes, usually covering an expanse of territory of about 7,000 yards, sometimes more, occasionally less. And what you do is: hit the ball … then walk 200-300 yards, find it … and hit it again … repeat it another time … and finally, “putt” the ball when you’ve reached the green and try to knock it into a hole. That’s it … that’s the game … you have to repeat these actions 18 times until you’ve “played 18 holes and completed the course.”

It sounds easy, but as anyone who has ever played knows, this sport/game is tough. It requires frequent practice and exceptional skills to be successful. Some people play for years and years … and never improve.

Fortunately, even those “duffers” whose ability remains static can now get better … by using the right set of irons. A set of golf clubs includes, of course 3-5 woods (for long distance shots) off the tee and from the fairway, a putter for “rolling the ball into the hole after you’ve reached the green … and a set of “numbered” irons (up to 9) for shorter distance shots.

These days, woods are state-of-the-art and even novice golfers are able to strike the ball well enough to send it flying 250 years or more. Putters have become more balanced and lightweight, as well, so that the average golfer has a better chance of “putting the ball” into the hole in one or two strokes.

And now, irons have improved, too. If you’re a “scratch” golfer or just a “duffer,” you may want to consider using “forged irons” to improve your game … and your score. Until now, just about all irons were cast from a mold and, while good, were difficult for novices or relatively-new golfers to use successfully.

Irons cast from a mold tended to be somewhat heavy, only moderately balanced … and they had a small “sweet spot” which made ball striking very difficult. There are much better irons available to you now.

Forged irons are crafted out of solid pieces of metal, a fact that makes them sturdier and easier-to-use than the old-fashioned irons that were cast from molds. This new, sturdier construction has resulted in irons that have the club’s weight more evenly distributed than in the past … have big club heads with larger “sweet spots” so that even mediocre golfers can use the irons effectively and are budget-friendly, too.

But, that’s not all. Forged irons also include “shafts” that are constructed in steel and/or graphite … another benefit for struggling golfers interested in improving their games. The steel shaft is strong and rigid and helps you to strike the ball solidly. The graphite shaft is extremely lightweight and ideally-suited for women … older golfers … and the very young.

So, are forged irons right for you? That’s a question only you can answer. However, if improving your golf game is important, forged irons can make it happen. They can definitely improve your performance.

In the beginning, that’s close to three hundred years ago, science played no role in the crafting of golf clubs … for a very good reason. There was very little, if anything, known back then about “torque” or “golf shaft flex” or any of the other scientific factors in use today.

No, back then, a craftsman or artisan would fashion a golf club, by hand, and turn it over to his wealthy customer. It was crude by modern standards, but certainly effective at the time.

In truth, science continued to play virtually no role in the construction of golf clubs until well into the twentieth century. It was then that a clever manufacturer figured out how to effectively use metal in the shaft of a golf club to dramatically improve swing, distance and overall performance.

The manufacturer created a mold, poured molten metal into the mold and when the metal hardened, a new and greatly improved “cast” iron golf club became available.

Clearly, science played a role in the early use of metal in fashioning and producing golf clubs. And golf club science and technology has only gotten better in the years since the first “cast” iron club appeared.

Today, science is used to create “golf shaft flex” in both irons and woods. What does that mean? It has everything to do with “the stiffness of the shaft.” If the shaft of the iron or wood is stiff, it becomes sturdier, provides much more “torque” in a golfer’s swing … allows for greater distance on shots … and ultimately for much better performance on the golf course, just about any golf course.

Science is also evident in club head technology. Modern woods and irons feature club heads that have “sweet spots” that lead to longer and straighter shots. In fact, it has become somewhat commonplace for a weekend golfer to drive a ball off a tee 250 yards or more … consistently. Why … the club shaft is stiffer and the club head allows for much greater accuracy. And it’s all due to ever-improving science and technology.

Of course, the greatest scientific innovations will mean little – or nothing at all – if you lack basic golfing skills. A scientifically-crafted 5 iron can have the features that may enable you to lift a ball off the fairway and put it on the green – on the fly – from 150 yards away … if you have reasonable golfing skills.

If your skills are lacking, if you are a beginner or just a “weekend duffer,” science and technology may help you … to a point. In that case, you need to improve your game, perhaps take lessons from the club pro … get better … and then you’ll be able to take full advantage of what science and technology have put into the golf clubs that fill your bag.

It may sound like you have lots of work ahead, but if you truly like golf, you think of it with passion. Improving your game so that you can use the improvements that science has put into your clubs is not work … it’s a work in progress … and a labor of love.

There is a commonly-held belief among many people in the world of golf that forged irons are difficult to use effectively … that their constant use increases golf scores instead of lowering them … that “cast” golf irons are always the better choice.

So, are these beliefs a myth or reality? Let’s examine the facts. Forged irons, which are relatively new to the game of golf (they’ve only been around for a number of years), were originally developed for the express purpose of helping “duffers” or less-skilled players to improve their scores … and their overall play on the golf course.

Unlike “cast” irons which are constructed of different metal parts that are “put together” to form an iron and are currently the mainstay of most golfers, forged irons are crafted from a single piece of metal, usually steel or graphite and are remarkably sturdy, as well.

What’s more, forged irons usually include a larger “golf head” and, as a result, a bigger “sweet spot,” two facts that help improve golf play.

Now, it’s absolutely true that experienced golfers, those who are capable of playing “scratch” golf or those who are capable of consistently completing 18 holes with scores in the mid-80s or better tend to gravitate toward “cast” golf irons.

The reason they use “cast” irons has a lot to do with “feel” and the fact that they have the skills to be effective with the smaller golf heads and sweet spots that are characteristics of “cast” golf irons. In other words, you have to be a good golfer to walk a golf course with a set of “cast” irons in your bag.

And yet, you are unlikely to ever see an experienced golfer hit a ball off the fairway using a forged iron. It would make him/her feel like a raw beginner because of the forged iron’s larger sweet spot and bigger golf head. It just won’t happen … ever.

Does that mean that forged irons are a bad idea for all golfers? The answer is absolutely not. As stated earlier, forged irons belong in the bags of golfers who are still learning the game and how to play it effectively.

In truth, forged irons tend to have their club weight more evenly distributed … and that makes them easier to use. The single-piece construction of the shaft – in steel or graphite – makes them stronger and sturdier and lighter and helps the beginning golfer to hit shots that are straighter … most of the time. And their “cavity back” club heads – with their much larger sweet spots – enable easier and better contact with the ball … even if the golfer has a flawed swing.

So are forged irons too difficult to play? The answer is, of course, no. The reality is that forged irons are “easier to play,” especially if you haven’t yet mastered the game.

Ideally suited for the very young or older players, too, as well as female golfers, forged irons can – and will – bring more enjoyment to your trip around the golf course … and a better score, too.

Start using them today.

Which are better for you?

There is an ongoing controversy making the rounds of golf clubhouses all over America. It is this: are oversized irons better for me than the standard-sized irons I’ve always used?

It’s a good question without an easy answer. That’s because any response you have to that question is likely to be based more on your “personal likes and dislikes” instead of performance and results. The better way to respond to that question – actually the only correct way – is to base your answer on whether or not your use of the larger irons has actually improved your performance on the course… and your score for 18 holes of play.

That is the only sensible “measuring stick,” So let’s examine the differences between oversized irons and standard-sized irons … and their relative value to you as a committed golfer. To begin:

Oversized irons almost always feature larger club heads and “sweet spots,” that area on the club head that you want to strike the ball. If you’re still learning the game … that is If you’re a beginner or perhaps an older player with waning athletic skills, a younger player who hasn’t mastered his or her swing or a female golfer who wants to get more distance out of your lower-numbered fairway clubs, an oversized set of irons makes perfect sense for you.

The larger irons help you overcome deficiencies or weaknesses in your game … enable you to hit many more accurate shots from off the fairway and from around the green and, generally, let you have more fun as you work your way from the 1st hole to the 18th hole. And this game should be all about fun.

But, what if you’re an experienced golfer who already consistently finishes a round of golf with a score in the 80s or better? It’s a good bet that your personal pride, your knowledge that you don’t need “special help’ from the clubs you use will steer you away – far, far away – from a set of oversized irons.

No, the only irons that will ever find their way into your bag will be the “standard kind,” irons that feature smaller club heads and sweet spots and require you to score well utilizing your skills and athletic ability.

More likely than not, you have always used standard-sized irons and never have given a thought to swinging an oversized 5 iron … 3 iron ,,, or 9 iron to “chip” your way to the hole from a few yards off the green.

You may not be a professional golfer, but your competitive spirit has you thinking like one. And your consistently good scores have you convinced that your decision to avoid oversized irons is the right choice for you.

Now, that doesn’t mean that oversized irons should be avoided “like the plague.” Again, if you’re still honing your golf skills and your golf game, you can give yourself a “gentle push” in the right direction by filling your bag with a new set of oversized irons. Remember: the larger sweet spot on the club head makes up for some of the weaknesses in your game. Who knows … the larger irons may even help you to compete with more experienced golfers.

Find out for yourself. Fill your bag with a set of oversized irons today.

Walk into a sporting goods store anywhere in America, pick up a golf club, swing at an imaginary golf ball and the club, as well as your swing, is likely to feel “right.” But, is it really right … is a golf club that you pick up “off the rack” the club you want to use when you’re out on the golf course?

If you care about golf and your performance, the answer to that question is no. Let me repeat – the answer is no. Here’s why.

Generic or “off the rack” golf clubs are often crafted in a standard size … feature a standard weight … a standard club head – they are standard (or ordinary) in every way.

But, you are not standard. You may be tall or short … you may require a large club head and “sweet spot” or a club that features the more common smaller club head and sweet spot … you may like “cast” irons of the more modern “forged irons” … or there may be other features you want that are not available in golf clubs – woods and irons – that can be found for sale in a sporting goods store.

And because you are unique in so many ways, you need a set of golf clubs that fits your specific physical characteristics … your likes and dislikes. And that means your best bet if you want to find the best golf club for you is to visit a pro shop at your local golf course … or go to a shop that specializes in golf equipment.

When you put yourself in the hands of a golf specialist, you can expect to be offered a set of golf clubs that is the right length for your height. That’s important. If you play with clubs that are too long or too short, you are almost certainly doomed to “hook” or “slice” your shots because you will be too close to the ball or too far away from it when you line up to swing your club and hit the ball.

Equally important, the golf specialist will work with you to find a club weight and club balance with which you’re 100% comfortable. This, too, means a lot. If you swing a club that doesn’t feel “right,” it will affect your results on the golf course and your score – negatively.

Now, you may be concerned that clubs that have been tailored to your specific needs may be expensive. Let’s face facts. Golf, in general is an expensive game to play. Greens fees and equipment often carry a hefty price tag.

But, if you love the game … if golf is your passion … if you want to play at the highest possible level – you need to “stretch your budget” and buy clubs that are made for you and only you – “custom-tailored” woods and irons and, of course, a putter you can love.

Get those “special” clubs, put them in your bag … and rush out to an early morning “tee off” time. Golf is about to become more fun and more satisfying than it has ever been in the past. Enjoy the experience.

The game of golf has been around for hundreds of years. Its actual beginning dates way back to Scotland in the mid-eighteenth century … more than 250 years ago.

Clearly, golf has been around for a long time. Today, it is one of the most popular participatory sports in America. Millions of men and women flood local golf courses each week in their ongoing attempts to “break 100.”

The game (or sport) is not easy, although professional golfers make it look like “anyone can do it.” And, because it is a difficult game to master, golf equipment manufacturers are continually striving to improve the clubs – irons and woods – and the golf balls, as well, to help their customers, “crazed weekend duffers,” to improve their scores for 18 holes or even for 9 holes.

From the onset of golf as an international game or sport – and continuing all the way up to and through the early 20th century – all clubs, woods and irons alike were crafted in wood. The reason may be that metals were still difficult to work with and shape in the mid 1700s, in the 1800s and early 1900s, as well. So the material of choice – make that necessity – was wood. And while wood was easier to work with than metal, it didn’t necessarily lead to the crafting of precision golf clubs.

The first dramatic change in club construction took place in the early 20th century when golf equipment manufacturers learned how to use molten metal to build the shaft and the club head of golf irons (shaft only for woods).

The process was simple: the manufacturer would create “molds” for the golf club it was producing … then pour in the molten metal … let it harden … and “presto”… the end result was a finished “cast” iron club.

“Cast” irons are still extremely popular today. In fact, most experienced golfers generally carry a full set of such irons in their bags. “Cast” irons generally feature smallish club heads and ”sweet spots,” but give golfers a “feel” for contact when they swing and hit the ball. As such, most skilled golfers carry – and use – “cast” irons.

But what can be said about forged irons? Constructed of a single piece of metal – generally steel, but sometimes lightweight graphite – they made their first appearance on the “golfing scene” about thirty years ago, perhaps a little longer than that.

The Callaway X Tour Forged Irons were the first of their kind to become available. And they were well-received by the golfing public, particularly by golfers with limited skills – beginners, young players, older players and lots of females.

Their immediate popularity stemmed from the fact that the shaft was incredibly strong and durable, the club head oversized and the club itself, very well balanced. All these factors helped those golfers who used forged irons to improve their game …and their scores for 18 holes.

Soon after Callaway introduced the first forged irons, manufacturers such as Adams and Wilson put their forged irons in stores, too.

Today, all major golf equipment manufacturers offer forged irons for sale. These “helpful” irons remain immensely popular with struggling golfers looking to improve their performance on the golf course.
